Paintless Dent Repair vs. Traditional Bodywork: Why We Don’t Use PDR on Every Dent

A customer pulled up last week with a golf-ball-sized ding on the rear door, the kind that comes from a shopping cart in a Stater Bros parking lot. He’d already priced it online at three different mobile PDR outfits, all quoting somewhere around $150. He wanted to know why our estimate came back different, and specifically why one of our techs said paintless might not even be the right call once he actually looked at the panel in person instead of from a phone photo.

That happens more than people expect. Paintless dent repair gets marketed as the default answer for any dent, mostly because it’s genuinely the better outcome when it applies: faster, cheaper, and it keeps your factory paint intact. But “any dent” isn’t accurate, and the gap between what a website promises and what a tech finds with their hand on the actual panel is exactly where customers get frustrated. Here’s what we’re actually looking at when we make that call, and what happens on both sides of it.

What Paintless Dent Repair Actually Does (and Doesn’t Do)

A PDR tech works the dent from behind the panel, using a combination of specialized rods, picks, and glue-pulling tabs to massage the metal back toward its original shape, usually while watching reflected light off a striped board to see the low spots as they come up. Done right, there’s no filler, no sanding, no repaint, no clear coat to cure. The factory finish that came off the assembly line 14 years ago is still the finish on the car when we’re done, which matters more than people realize when it comes time to sell or trade the car in.

What that method can’t do is fix paint. It’s a metal-shaping process, not a coatings process. If the impact already broke the finish, pushing the metal back out doesn’t put the paint back together, and depending on the access point, sometimes makes a small crack worse by flexing it further. That single fact is behind most of the “why can’t you just PDR it” conversations we have at the counter.

The Four Things That Actually Decide If Your Dent Qualifies

We check the same four things on every estimate, in roughly this order, because each one can disqualify PDR on its own regardless of how the other three look.

Is the paint still intact?

We run a fingernail across the center of the dent and along the tightest curve of the impact. If the nail catches on anything, even a hairline, the clear coat has already broken through and PDR is off the table for that spot. Spidering (a web of fine cracks radiating from the impact point) is the one that surprises people most, because it can look like a shadow or a smudge from a few feet away and only shows up as actual cracked finish under a shop light held at a low angle.

Is it a smooth dent or a sharp crease?

A rounded dent, where the metal simply pushed in and stayed within its original shape, is the ideal PDR candidate. A crease, where the impact folded the metal into a sharper angle, is a different animal. Folding stretches the metal past the point it was stamped for, so pushing it back doesn’t let it lie flat the way it did before. There’s no dry-ice or heat-gun trick that fixes an actual crease. Some panels with a mild crease can still be worked with more time and skill, but a sharp, defined crease line almost always ends up needing filler and a respray to look right.

Where on the panel is it?

Door edges, hood edges, quarter panel lips, and wheel arch openings are hemmed, meaning the metal is folded back on itself for strength. That reinforcement is exactly what makes those spots so resistant to a PDR tool working from behind, because there’s often nowhere to access the back of the panel at all in those locations, or the metal is doubled up and won’t move the way a flat door skin does. A dent an inch off the door edge can be a fifteen-minute job. The same size dent sitting right on that edge often isn’t.

Has this panel been repainted before?

We check the door jambs and look for overspray, and if we’re not sure, a paint depth gauge tells us in about ten seconds. Aftermarket or shop respray paint is frequently laid down thicker than factory finish and behaves differently under flex. Factory paint has some give to it. A repaint job, especially an older one, tends to crack rather than stretch when we try to work metal from behind it, which turns a routine PDR job into a job that cracks the exact paint we were trying to preserve.

What Happens When PDR Isn’t an Option

When one of those four rules out paintless repair, the job shifts to traditional bodywork, and it’s a genuinely different process, not a shortcut version of the same thing:

  • The damaged area gets worked back into rough shape, then filled with body filler and shaped to match the panel’s original contour.
  • The filled area is block-sanded with a guide coat so the tech can actually see high and low spots under raking light, not guess at them.
  • Primer goes down, gets sanded again, and the panel gets masked off, usually including at least one adjacent panel if the color is metallic or pearl, because those finishes are nearly impossible to spot-match without blending into the next panel over.
  • Basecoat, then clear coat, then a bake cycle in the paint booth, then a cure period before the car can be handled or driven in rain without risk to the finish.

None of that is wrong or slow for the sake of being slow. It’s what it actually takes to make a repaired panel disappear next to the one beside it, and it’s the same process whether the shop that told you “no” on PDR is us or anyone else doing it correctly.

Cost and Time: The Real Difference

In our experience, a straightforward PDR job on a single dent typically runs somewhere in the $125 to $375 range depending on size, how many dents are being worked in one visit, and how much access the tech has to the back of the panel. Most of that work is done the same day, often in under an hour for a single ding.

Traditional single-panel repair typically starts around $450 to $900 once filler, primer, paint, and labor are all in the estimate, and that number climbs if a blend panel is required or if the damaged panel sits near a sensor that needs recalibration afterward, which we’re seeing more often on newer vehicles with radar or camera housings built into bumpers and fenders. Turnaround is usually one to three days rather than same-day, mostly driven by paint cure time, not labor time.

We’d rather quote a job accurately up front than have a customer find out on pickup day that the “quick PDR fix” they were promised somewhere else turned into a paint job because the tech missed a hairline crack during the phone estimate.

The Insurance Math Nobody Explains at the Counter

Here’s a mix-up we see constantly: a parking lot ding from a cart or another car door gets filed as a comprehensive claim, when it’s actually a collision claim in most policies. Comprehensive covers non-collision events like hail, vandalism, fire, theft, and animal strikes. If your car got dented by contact with an object, another vehicle, or a stationary structure, that’s collision coverage, and collision deductibles run higher on most policies (commonly $500 to $1,000) than comprehensive deductibles (often $100 to $300). That distinction matters because it changes whether filing is even worth it.

Run the numbers before you call your agent. If your collision deductible is $500 and the PDR estimate comes back at $275, filing the claim gets you nothing; you’d pay the full $275 out of pocket either way, plus you’d have a claim on record for a job insurance never actually paid toward. We walk customers through that math before they file, not after, because a claim history follows the policy even on a claim that paid zero dollars.

What We Actually Tell Customers

Our default position is to try paintless first whenever a dent genuinely qualifies, because it’s less money, less time, and it keeps the factory paint that a future buyer or a CarFax paint-meter reading will notice. We won’t talk a customer out of a legitimate PDR job to sell a bigger repair.

What we won’t do is force PDR onto a dent that doesn’t qualify just because it’s the cheaper answer the customer was hoping to hear. A tech pushing on cracked paint or a hard crease to “make it work” usually ends up costing more in the end, because now there’s a botched PDR attempt on top of the original damage, and the eventual respray has to fix both. If a $150 mobile PDR quote came in sight-unseen over a phone photo, that’s the risk being taken on your behalf without you knowing it. We’d rather tell you no on the front end than hand back a panel that looks worse than when it came in.

Can a shop start with paintless dent repair and switch to traditional repair partway through?

Yes, and it happens more than customers expect. A tech can get a dent 80% pulled and find the last bit of metal won’t release cleanly, or the pull reveals a hairline crack in the clear coat that wasn’t visible before work started. At that point we stop, tell you what we’re seeing, and requote for filler and paint on just that section rather than continuing to push and risk stretching the metal further.

Does paintless dent repair affect resale value or a CarFax report?

Properly done PDR generally helps resale value compared to traditional repair, since the factory paint stays on the panel and paint-thickness gauges (which some dealers and private buyers use) won’t flag anything unusual. Traditional repair with a respray will show a thicker paint reading on that panel, which isn’t a dealbreaker but is something a picky buyer may ask about.

Is it worth filing an insurance claim for a single dent?

Usually not, if the repair estimate is lower than your deductible, which is common for a single PDR job in the $125 to $375 range against a typical $500 collision deductible. You’d cover the full cost either way, but you’d also have a claim on file. We recommend paying out of pocket for anything under your deductible amount.

What if the dent has a light scratch but the paint isn’t fully cracked?

A surface scratch that hasn’t broken through the clear coat is usually fine to PDR, and we can often buff the scratch out separately afterward. The dividing line is whether the scratch has gone through the clear coat into the color coat or bare metal; if it has, that spot needs to be treated as broken paint, not a clean PDR candidate, even if the rest of the dent looks textbook.

Does paintless dent repair work on aluminum panels or EV bodies?

It can, but aluminum work-hardens faster than steel, meaning it can only take so much manipulation before it resists moving further or risks cracking, so techs plan for fewer, more precise pulls rather than the gradual working steel allows.
