Customers hear “OEM,” “aftermarket,” “used,” and “reconditioned” thrown around like they’re interchangeable warning labels, and estimators and insurance adjusters don’t usually stop to explain what each one actually means or why a shop will use one on a fender and refuse it flat on a frame rail. So here’s the actual breakdown, the way we explain it at the counter.
“Used OEM” and “LKQ” Are the Same Part, and That Surprises Almost Everyone
The industry term is LKQ, which stands for like kind and quality, and it gets treated like its own separate category on a lot of estimates. It isn’t. An LKQ part is a genuine OEM part, made by the actual manufacturer, pulled off a vehicle that was totaled, stolen and recovered, or dismantled for some other reason. It is not a copy. It is not a lower-quality substitute. It is the exact same part your car came with, just with a previous life.
What actually varies is condition and history, not authenticity. When a used bumper cover, fender, or door skin comes into our bay from a salvage supplier, we’re checking three things before it goes anywhere near your car: does the paint code match or is it going to need a full respray anyway, is there any sign of prior collision damage on that specific panel that the seller didn’t disclose, and are the factory mounting points and clips still intact instead of cracked from a rushed removal at the yard. A legitimate salvage part usually still has the vehicle’s paint code sticker or a partial VIN etching on it somewhere, which is one of the fastest ways we confirm it actually came off the vehicle it’s supposed to have come from and isn’t a mismatched substitute someone tried to pass off.
The upside is real. A used OEM part typically runs somewhere in the range of 20 to 50 percent less than the same part new, and unlike aftermarket, you’re not gambling on a third-party manufacturer’s tolerance on fit. The downside is just as real: you’re buying a part with unknown mileage on things like weatherstripping, and cosmetic panels sometimes carry small dents or scuffs that need to be factored into the labor, not just the parts cost. We’ll tell a customer straight up when a used panel isn’t actually going to save them money once you count the extra bodywork it needs.
New OEM, Used OEM, Aftermarket, and Remanufactured: What’s Actually Different
Every part on a collision repair estimate falls into one of four buckets, and California law actually requires the estimate to say which one, in writing, for every part listed. Insurance Code Section 1874.87 requires that if an insurer specifies a non-OEM aftermarket part, that part has to be identified by manufacturer and warranted to be at least equal to the original in kind, quality, safety, fit, and performance. That’s the law working as intended, and it’s also exactly why the category actually matters, not just the price.
New OEM
Brand new, made by or for the vehicle’s manufacturer, sold through a dealer parts network. Highest cost, guaranteed fit, and the only category that automatically satisfies every manufacturer position statement (more on those below) without us having to make a judgment call.
Used OEM / LKQ
Genuine manufacturer part, previously installed, sourced from a salvage vehicle. Same authenticity as new OEM, variable condition, meaningful cost savings, and the category most often misunderstood as being somehow less legitimate than it is.
Aftermarket
Made by a third-party manufacturer, not the vehicle’s original manufacturer, designed to fit and function like the OEM part. Quality genuinely varies by manufacturer, and this is the category where we’ve seen the biggest range between a part that installs clean and one that fights us the whole way through. We’ve had aftermarket fenders that needed extra shims at nearly every mounting bolt just to close the panel gaps evenly, adding real labor time that never showed up on the original parts quote.
Remanufactured
Almost always mechanical or electrical components, not body panels, things like alternators, calipers, or motors, rebuilt to factory spec from a used core. Less relevant to most collision estimates but worth knowing when it shows up on one, usually for a part damaged alongside the collision but not caused by it.

The Real Test We Use: Structural and Safety, or Cosmetic
This is the actual decision, and it has nothing to do with how expensive a part is. It comes down to one question: if this part fails or performs even slightly differently than spec, does that change how the car protects the people inside it in the next accident.
Where we won’t use used or aftermarket, period
Frame rails, structural crush zones, subframes, seatbelt pretensioners and retractors, airbags and their sensors, and any bracket that an ADAS camera or radar module bolts to. These parts are engineered to fail in a specific, tested way, absorbing or redirecting crash energy exactly where the manufacturer designed them to. A used or aftermarket substitute might look identical and even weigh the same, and we still won’t install it, because the part that matters isn’t the metal, it’s the metallurgy and the crush behavior underneath it, and there’s no way to verify that on a part with unknown history. On airbags specifically, we won’t touch a used unit under any circumstances. A deployed or improperly stored airbag can fail to fire, or fire wrong, and there’s no visual inspection that catches that before it’s too late to matter.
Where used or quality aftermarket makes sense
Bumper covers, fenders, non-structural trim pieces, mirror housings, and grilles. None of these are part of the vehicle’s crash energy path. If a used fender is in good condition and the price difference is real, that’s an easy yes from us, and we’ll say so to the customer directly instead of defaulting to “OEM only” out of habit.
This is also where the John Eagle Collision Center case out of Dallas is worth knowing about, because it’s the reason shops take this line as seriously as we do. In 2017 a jury awarded the Seebachan family just under $42 million, with the shop responsible for roughly $31.5 million of it, after the shop glued a replacement roof onto a 2010 Honda Fit instead of using the 108 spot welds Honda’s own repair manual specified. The car was rear-ended in a later accident, the glued roof gave way, the safety cage collapsed, and the fuel tank ruptured into a fire. That case wasn’t about a part being fake. The steel was real steel. It was about a shop deciding a cheaper method was close enough on a structural repair, and it’s the same reason our frame straightening decisions come down to hard engineering limits, not a visual guess, once the damage reaches the structure.
Why a Manufacturer’s Own “Position Statement” Sometimes Overrides Everything Else
Most major automakers now publish formal position statements, official documents that specify exactly how a given repair has to be done and what OEM parts are acceptable, through a shared industry resource called OEM1Stop. As of the most recent count reported in the industry trade press, 43 automaker brands now participate, publishing procedures directly to repairers instead of leaving it to guesswork. When a manufacturer’s position statement says a part has to be new OEM, that instruction beats our own general judgment call, no matter how good the used part in front of us looks.
This comes up constantly on anything with a forward-facing camera or radar sensor mounted to it. A used bumper cover with a radar bracket, for instance, might be structurally fine but have a bracket that’s been flexed slightly out of tolerance from its first removal, which won’t fail an eyeball check but will absolutely throw off the calibration afterward. We’ve had cars come back from calibration with the system reporting a fault that only showed up because the mounting geometry was off by a few millimeters from a used bracket, not because the sensor itself was bad. On EVs and newer ADAS-heavy vehicles, the stakes go even higher. What This Actually Costs You, and What to Ask Before You Sign Off
Most of the time, the parts decision isn’t ours alone. The insurer’s estimate specifies a category for each part, and we either agree it’s appropriate, push back on anything structural or safety-related, or, if you’re paying out of pocket, walk you through the tradeoff directly. On a typical mid-size sedan bumper repair in our shop, going new OEM instead of a used or aftermarket cover usually adds somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 to 400 dollars depending on the vehicle, which is a real number worth knowing before the estimate conversation happens, not after.
